Sign Up for a Gyanam Account

You will need to create a Gyanam account to be able to delve into the Gyanam STEM Ecosystem of fun project based learning. If you are below 13 years of age, you will need your parent/guardian to create an account for themselves initially and then create an account for you. To create an account please click on the “Sign up” link on the App start screen.

Sign up

On the Signup screen, you will be prompted to enter you first name, last name, Email address and secure password. Please try to not use the same email as you use for your other accounts. You will need to enter the 5 digit Captcha.


Sign up for a Gyanam Account

To create the account with the provided email id, you will need to select the “Join Gyanam” button. A One time password (OTP) will be sent to the email address you had provided during the sign up process for Verification purposes. Please check your email account to retrieve the one time password sent.

Please be sure to review Gyanam’ s Privacy Policy ( which provides details about how the data you provide is handled and the measure we undertake to make sure that the data you provide is securely handled at all times) and Terms and Conditions.

OTP Verification

You will need to retrieve the one time password sent to the email address provided during the sign up process and enter the 5 digit password in the Verify OTP screen.

Once the OTP has been verified, the app will launch the Family Profile screen to enter more details for Area of interest, children information(for children below 13 years) , date of birth etc.

Sign in

Please enter the email address and password used during the sign up process in the case of teenagers and parents/guardians. Children 13 years or below can use the user name and 4 digit password created during the Family Profile creation.

Family Profile

The Family Profile is the main repository of the information regarding the user (teenagers) or parent/guardian and their children. Gyanam currently supports 2 child accounts associated with a parent/guardian.

Profile Picture: You can choose an existing picture or use the camera to capture an image for the profile picture.

Location: if access to the GPS has been granted, your address (only city, State and country) will be used. If the location is not accessible, you can enter your location information (only city, State and country).

Role: Currently 2 roles are supported

  • Teenagers can be participants
  • if the child is below 13 years of age, Parents will need to choose the Parent/Guardian option.

Teenager Profile

  • Gender: Please select the gender of the participant.
  • Area of Interest: Please choose the STEM area of interest in which you would like to enhance your learning.

Parent/Guardian Profile

Parental Authorization code : When a parent/guardian creates a Gyanam account, he/she would need to create a 6 digit Parental Authorization code (referred to as Access Pin). Please make sure that the Access PIN is not shared with your children and it is your responsibility to make sure that the Access PIN is saved securely outside the Gyanam app.

Gender: Please select the gender of the parent/guardian

Add Child: Please select the Add Child field to create a Child account.

Child Profile

UserName: Please create a username for your child. Please do not use an email address for the child’s username

Password: Please create a 4 digit numeric password that your child can remember.

Please enter your child’s first and last name, Date of Birth, School (optional) , Grade(optional) and gender.

Please choose STEM area of interest that your child would like to participate in.

Please choose the Add option ( circled in red) to save the child profile.

You can associate 2 child profiles with a parent/guardian’s account.

Wall

Once you have saved the Family Profile, you will be directed to the App’s home page (Wall). The Wall displays any posts from the user or his friends and any comments to the posts. The wall also displays recommended kits based on the user’s STEM areas of interest.

On the Wall, there are 3 links for Family Profile, Friends and groups respectively.


Gyanam Wall

The Family Profile Tab provide details of the participant and the parent/Guardian details along with their preferred STEM areas of interests. The family profile cannot be updated by children below 13 years of age. The Family Profile information would need to be update by the parent/guardian from their accounts

The friends Tab displays the current friends of the participant. Parent/guardian are linked to the participant by default in the case the child is below 13 years of age. To add a friend, the user will need to go to the Friends tab and then click on the “Add friend” icon on the top right information bar of the App.

All the users of the Gyanam app (parents and children) will be displayed in this screen. Please use the Search option to filter the results. Click on the “Add Friend” button below the user’s name to send the Friend request. In the case the child user is below 13 years of age, the user is prompted to request the parent/guardian to approve the add friend request ( This is done to protect your child and to make sure the parent approves the request). The parent/guardian will need to enter the Parent Authorization Pin (PIN). Once the PIN has been authenticated with the PIN created by the parent/guardian, the friend request is sent to the person selected.

The user has the option to also send a friend request to the parent/guardian or any sibling of the child along with the friend request. The parent/guardian and sibling if applicable are provided as additional members to send the friend request as part of the Send request confirmation popup. Please use the child’s account to send requests to the other children.

Accept/Reject Friend request

If a Gyanam user has sent a friend request to you, you will receive a notification about the friend request. A numeric indicator, which indicates the number of requests pending to be acknowledged is displayed on the top right of the notification icon (bell icon). To view the friend request, please click on the notification (bell) icon and the notification screen will display the pending requests that awaits the user’s action. The user will need to either accept or reject the friend request. In the case the user is below 13 years of age, the app will prompt for the Parental Authorization PIN to be entered by the parent/guardian before the friend request is accepted or rejected. Parents please be sure to verify the friend request is from a known person before entering the PIN and accepting the friend request. Once the friend request is accepted, the friend will now be present in the friends list.

View Friend’s Profile

To view a friend’s Profile, select the friend and choose View Profile. The friends profile picture, location and STEM areas of interests are displayed.

Delete a friend

To delete a friend, select the friend from the Friends page and choose “Delete Friend”. In the case the user is below 13 years of age, the app will prompt for the Parental Authorization PIN to be entered by the parent/guardian before the delete friend request is processed. The user will be prompted to confirm the delete friend request. Once the user confirms the delete request, the friend is no longer part of the user’s friend network.

Chat

To chat with a friend, select the friend and choose the chat option. The chat page is displayed and the user can begin to chat with the friend. Currently if one of the user leaves the chat page, the messages typed by the friend is not received by the user.

View Friend’s Profile

To view a friend’s Profile, select the friend and choose View Profile. The friends profile picture, location and STEM areas of interests are displayed.

Groups

This Group screen shows all the groups that the user is currently part of. If the user is not part of any groups at this moment, the message “Create a group with your Gyanam friend or join existing group matching with your interests” is displayed on the page.

A Gyanam group is created by members who are linked by interest in closely linked STEM area of interests. The group members by consensus decides the STEM experimental kits that they could purchase based on the group’s area of interests. Once the group members receive the experimental kits, the group members start to work on their STEM kits. The group members meet at scheduled meetups (Which is determined the Frequency of meetup setting) specified when the group was created. During the meetup, each child demonstrates the experimental kit and speaks about the learnings and experiences met when using the Kit. Once all the children have demonstrated the kits at the meetup, the children exchange the experimental kits with their group members based on the children choice selected from the app.

Create Group.

To create a group, click on the menu icon on the top right corner of the app and choose “Create Group”

The user will need to enter the following fields to create the group.

Group name – Please use a name which provides enough information to other users on the type of group created.

Group size – This field indicates the estimated members that the group would consists of. Once the group has been filled with members that match the group size, no more members will be allowed to join the group. It is recommended to keep the number of members in the group to around 4 members. Gyanam supports up to 6 members in a group.

Frequency of meetups in weeks(2-4) – This field indicates the schedule at which the group meets to demonstrate their kits once the group’s members have received their kits. Gyanam recommends that the group members meet every 2 weeks.

Description – Please provide a detailed description of the group, its goals and the area of interests. This information is useful and is visible to other users when they search for groups that match their area of interest and geographic location.

Public or private group – if the group is set to private, this group will not be displayed to other users.

Area of Interests – The STEM area of interest that the group would like to work on.

Parents/guardian will need to create the group from the child’s account. This option is disabled in the parent’s account.

Add members to the group

To add members to the group, please select the menu option on the top right corner and choose “Add member”. User are only allowed to invite Gyanam users who are in their friend’s list. To select a friend to whom a request to join the group is to be sent, please select the “invite” button to send a request to join the group. The user who creates the group is tagged to be the group admin.

Once a user has been invited to join a group, the user will receive a notification to accept the invitation to join the group. If the user accepts the invite, he/she will be added to the group. ”. In the case the user is below 13 years of age, the app will prompt for the Parental Authorization PIN to be entered by the parent/guardian before the join group request is processed. If the user rejects the invitation, the group admin can send a request to another interested user to join the group.

Kit Assignment

Once all the members have accepted their invitation to join the group, the members would need to choose a kit based on the group’s area of interests. Any member or the group admin can assign or purchase kits after the group members consent to this option (This is done between the group members outside of the App). After the initial kit assignment is completed, only the user or the group admin can change STEM kit information for the user. The user would need to click on the “+” icon to add an experimental kit, A popup with the following options will be displayed.

If a group member is not able to find a STEM kit on the Gyanam App kits recommendation, the member can purchase the kit and will need to enter the following fields

Kit Name – Please enter the kit Name of the STEM experimental Kit the group member will purchase.

Age – Please enter the recommended age group of the STEM experimental kit.

Manufacturer Name – Please enter the manufacturer of the STEM experimental kit

Category – Please choose a category of STEM area of interest of the experimental kit.

Once the above fields have been updated by the group member, Please press the “Save Kit” button to save the Kit information.


Bring our own Kit


Bring your own Kit

Once the user saves the Kit group, the group screen is displayed. You will notice that a “Kit Received” checkbox is displayed below the group member’s name. Once the group member has received the experimental kit from the manufacturer or point of sale, the member would need to select the “Kit Received” checkbox to indicate that the member has the kit in his possession.

There are 2 other icons present to the right of the members name, a Pen icon which allows the user to change his kit and a circular icon which is used to choose a kit from a group member once the current meetup is complete.

View Group Wish List

This option will display all the kits that the group members have added to the group wish list earlier and the user can proceed to purchase the kit from the group wish list if desired. The group members have an option to add any kit to the group wish list (Please refer to the section “Adding a Kit to the group wish list”. This option helps the group to create a list of STEM kits which interests the members in the group. In case there are no kits in the groups wish list, the page will show “No kits have been added to the group wish list”.

If there are kits present in the Group wish list, the user can select the kit which he/she is interested in purchasing.

The details of the selected kit is displayed. To view more details of the Kit, please click on the More Icon if enabled, this will show any videos associated with the Kit.The user can select the “Buy Kit” icon to purchase the kit. In the case the user is below 13 years of age, the app will prompt for the Parental Authorization PIN to be entered by the parent/guardian before the Buy request is processed.


Kit Details

This option will launch the browser within the app and open the STEM kit page on the Amazon website. The parent/guardian would need their credentials to logon to the amazon website. This credentials is different from the Gyanam credentials. The user’s parent/guardian can now purchase the kit.

To transition back to the Gyanam app from the STEM kit page on Amazon, Please click on the Gyanam link on the top right corner of the screen. Once you transition back to the Gyanam app, the user will be prompted to confirm “Did you complete purchase of” If you have the same STEM kit from the Group’s wish list, Click “Yes”. If you have purchased a different STEM kit (different from the kit the user had initially chosen to buy from the Amazon website, please click “No”. and please choose the option “Bring your own Kit” to update your kit information in the group.

View Recommended Kits

This option will display all the kits that meet the Group’s Area of Interest that were chosen when the group was created. The user can select the kit which he/she is interested in purchasing.

View All Kits

This option will display all the kits that are in the Gyanam database which meets the age group of the users in the group. The user can select the kit which he/she is interested in purchasing. The details of the selected kit is displayed. To view more details of the Kit, please click on the More Icon if enabled, this will show any videos associated with the Kit. The user can select the “Buy Kit” icon to purchase the kit. In the case the user is below 13 years of age, the app will prompt for the Parental Authorization PIN to be entered by the parent/guardian before the Buy request is processed. Kits Received

Once the group member has received the experimental kit from the manufacturer or Amazon, the member would need to select the “Kit Received” checkbox to indicate that the member has the kit in his possession. There is an Edit Icon (Pen) which allows the user to update his kit if he/she wants to get a different kit or if facing an issue with the STEM kit. Only the user or the group admin can update the kit for the user once meetups have started or if the kit has issues.

View Groups

The user can view all the groups he is part by selecting Groups from the wall page. All the groups the user is currently in will be displayed. To view more info, click on the info icon next to the group name.

Meetups

Once the members receive the kits and the last member in the group selects the Kits received checkbox, the user is prompted to enter the meetup start date and location. It is recommended to choose a meetup start date about 2 weeks in the future to allow kids to work with the chosen STEM Kit

The Gyanam App will create ‘n’ meetups where n refers to the number of members in the group. The 2nd Meetup is scheduled to the number of weeks the group admin had set in the Meetup frequency field and this holds true for the additional meetups. If any user needs to change the Meetup date or time, the user needs to contact the group admin to update the meetup date/time. Any user can add a new meetup to the existing meetups. In the case the user is below 13 years of age, the app will prompt for the Parental Authorization PIN to be entered by the parent/guardian before the Add Meetup request is processed. The user will need to add the meetup name , location and date/time.

At each meetup, each user in the group demonstrates the STEM kit experiments that he/she had performed and provides a brief talk on the learning experience with this KIT. Once the meetup is completed, the meetup is shown as grayed out and cannot be edited. Once all the meetups have been completed, the group is treated as closed.
